What’s this about?
Smart doorbells are everywhere—Amazon Ring, Google Nest, etc. — but are they really smart? And what are the privacy consequences of these always-on, cloud-connected devices?
In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the social and privacy impact of commercial smart doorbells. Then we’ll dive into building our very own privacy-conscious smart doorbell using a Raspberry Pi with camera, basic electronics, and open-source software.
What you’ll learn:
- The legal & ethical issues of smart surveillance
- How to build a DIY smart doorbell using Raspberry Pi
- How to integrate Telegram and Jitsi for private video calls
How it works:
We’ll guide you step-by-step in building a prototype. All materials are provided during the workshop. Afterwards, you can choose to purchase your own kit (€125–151, depending on configuration) to continue building at home.
Who’s behind this?
This workshop is created by media artist Roos Groothuizen and Dave Borghuis, founder of hackerspace Tkkrlab.
📦 Reserve your spot now! Limited to 10 participants. All skill levels welcome.
